TRAINING OBJECTIVE : Apply principles of intervention for people with a major neurocognitive disorder to foster a climate of collaboration and improved quality of life.

TARGET CUSTOMERS : This training course is aimed at healthcare professionals, PABs, volunteers and caregivers.

ABBREVIATED : The new geriatric approach to treating major neurocognitive disorders emphasizes the dignity of the person, taking advantage of their still-active capacities to maintain a certain quality of life. This approach has an immediate impact on the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms. The focus is on cooperation rather than coercion, thus reducing agitation, aggression and anxiety.

Specific activities will be covered during the training to enhance the patient's strengths rather than their losses, even in severe cases of Alzheimer's disease. We have recently seen the use of activities such as music to awaken memories buried in the memory, in order to re-establish contact with people in the advanced stages of the disease.

This new approach to geriatrics reduces the number of problematic situations experienced on a daily basis (suspicion of theft, wandering and repeated questions, to name but a few) by up to 87%. Not only do we succeed in slowing down the process of loss of capacity and the progression of the disease, but everyone - patients, carers and those around them - benefit from this approach, which improves their comfort and quality of life.

Accredited training 7 hours. Estimated time to complete all modules: 7 hours

Trainer : Mireille Guillemette inf.B.ed. trainer and author. president of Mire Formation Conseil inc, and teacher at the CEVQ (Centre d'excellence du vieillissement de Québec).
