Today's aging population, chronic illnesses and co-morbidity are the source of major, often unrecognized health problems, including delirium. Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is quite common in elderly people who are losing their autonomy, or who have a number of physical and cognitive frailties.

Delirium syndrome is important in geriatrics. It is often the tip of the iceberg of an acute health problem, presenting itself as an atypical syndrome of a serious illness such as pneumonia or myocardial infarction, or of a multitude of symptoms that degrade the state of health of the elderly person.
This syndrome has major consequences for the sufferer. The loss of autonomy and long-term cognitive sequelae increase the length of stay in institutions and the cost of care. Hence the importance of early detection of this syndrome, given that only a small proportion of cases are actually detected by clinicians.

This course will review the latest scientific knowledge and the results of a number of research projects carried out in recent years. The prevalence of delirium, its predisposing factors and how to detect it are the focus of this training. How to describe this syndrome accurately and, above all, provide an unequivocal vocabulary for assessing the mental state of the elderly is another important aspect of this training course on delirium syndrome in geriatrics.
