Since February 2019, the professional orders have jointly clarified the responsibility of nursing assistants in administering a PRN.
The nursing assistant can now administer an individual prescription without reassessment by the nurse.
Extract from the joint OIIQ OIIAQ notice, published in February 2019:
"Each individual prescription is for a single person who has been previously assessed by the prescriber. Thus, in the presence of an individual prescription specifying the reason for its use, the nursing assistant may administer PRN prescribed drugs, and do so autonomously." https://www.oiiaq.org/files/publication/20190311-avis-conjoint-administration-medicament-prn.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0Qumn21iHQWGUvkmSfjkgvhs6L6iTYlpdXDTPOb2XiOKqkaE8JKW8YPmg
It is essential to distinguish between individual and group prescriptions. In the latter case, assessment by the nurse is always necessary.
