OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING: Apply intervention principles to people with a major neurocognitive disorder to foster a collaborative environment and improve quality of life.

TARGET CUSTOMER: This training is aimed at healthcare professionals, PAs, volunteers and caregivers.

Abbreviation: The new approach in geriatrics to treat major neurocognitive disorders highlights the dignity of the person by taking advantage of the still active abilities to maintain a certain quality of life. The effect of this approach is immediate on the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms. The goal is primarily the collaboration of the person rather than coercion, thus reducing agitation, aggression and anxiety.

Specific activities will be discussed during the training to emphasize the patient’s strengths rather than their losses, even in severe cases of Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, the use of activities such as music has been seen to awaken memories buried in memory in order to restore contact with people affected in advanced stages of the disease.

This new approach in geriatrics reduces up to 87% problematic situations experienced on a daily basis (suspicion of theft, wandering, and repeated questions, to name just a few examples). Not only does it help slow down the process of loss of abilities and the progression of the disease, but all patients, caregivers, and the person’s family members also benefit from this approach, which improves their comfort and quality of life.

Accredited training of 7 hours. Estimated time to complete all modules: 7 hours

Trainer: Mireille Guillemette, B.Ed. educator and author. President of Mire Formation Conseil inc., and teacher at the CEVQ (Centre d’excellence du vieillissement de Québec)
