Dementia: myth and reality

Dementia: myth and reality

Myth: false belief often based on a part of reality, shared by several people. We multiply this belief in good faith, because we're certain of its veracity.

I'd like to present you with the current state of global knowledge on the true risk and protective factors for dementia. See the table below.

It is, for the most part, the lifestyle choices we make that will influence our state of health.

This puts us at low risk of developing dementia in old age:

  • Exercise
  • Mediterranean-style diet
  • keep your brain active
  • control of diabetes and hypertension, screening and treatment of depression
  • healthy weight

This kills two birds with one stone, because what's good for your brain is also good for your cardiovascular health. In addition to lowering your risk of dementia, you also reduce your risk of stroke and heart problems.
