For 10 years, globally, things have evolved in an incredible way in the field of dementia. Research, care, and the goal of creating a world that is friendly to people with dementia are bringing together researchers and stakeholders from all over the world.
We know much more; the risk factors are established. In this regard, did you know that 30% of the cases can be prevented and avoided? The modifiable risk factors are: stimulation and education received before the age of 12, depression, sedentary lifestyle, HTA, obesity, smoking, hypercholesterolemia and poorly controlled diabetes.
Sedentary lifestyle particularly increases the risk of Alzheimer’s dementia, frontotemporal and vascular dementia. Since the brain uses a large proportion of blood nutrients, it needs a healthy cardiovascular system. Physical activity is the best way to nourish and oxygenate our brain properly.
Fortunately, care has also evolved. A few years ago, we used the same approach and the same medications for Alzheimer’s disease and mental illnesses. We now know that these are extremely different problems and conditions.
I invite you to watch this 30-minute video. It’s in English, but I assure you that language is not important here, because the images are powerful. Our society is being brought to this point; our healthcare environments must make such a shift.
I invite you to share your comments after watching the video.
