Since February 2019, the professional associations have jointly clarified the responsibilities of auxiliary nurses in the administration of a PRN.
The auxiliary nurse can now administer a medication prescribed by a doctor without a reassessment by the nurse.
Extract from the joint OIIQ-OIIAQ opinion published in February 2019:
«Each individual prescription is intended for a single person who has undergone a prior assessment by the prescriber. Thus, in the presence of an individual prescription specifying the reason for its use, the auxiliary nurse can administer the PRN medications autonomously.» https://www.oiiaq.org/files/publication/20190311-avis-conjoint-administration-medicament-prn.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0Qumn21iHQWGUvkmSfjkgvhs6L6iTYlpdXDTPOb2XiOKqkaE8JKW8YPmg
It is imperative to distinguish the individual order from the collective order. In the latter case, the assessment by the nurse is always necessary.
